Our golden girl Ella Williams has been crowned the NZ surfing open women’s champion for the second year in a row!
The ‘National Surfing Championships’ are regarded as New Zealand’s top surfing comp. The event dates back to 1963 and the formation of surfing New Zealand (then called NZ Surfing Association). Held in Piha from the 8th – 14th of January this year, the event attracted only the best of the best of New Zealand Surfers.
Ella battled it out in the final against Gabriella Sansom, but she went on to secure the lead and take her second national title in the division. She is the first woman to defend her title in 16 years, and is has now headed off to Australia to begin her international campaign on the world qualifying series.
“I am so happy to defend the title this year, we have had some hard conditions throughout the week but the waves were good today and I enjoyed being pushed by all the Kiwi girls who continue to improve year after year”.
